Pulling at Threads

Pulling at Threads is a 4-week course to illuminate your life and practice through an exploration of Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras.

Whether you’re new to yoga philosophy or have been studying it for years, this series offers space to get curious, ask questions, and engage with these teachings in a way that is thoughtful, practical, contemporary, and personal.

The word sutra can be translated as “strand” or “thread.” A single thread has its own character and significance; woven together, many threads create something much larger. Over four sessions, we’ll explore selected sutras from Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras, considering both the individual teachings and the bigger picture: yoga as a system for understanding and responding to the challenges of being human.

What to expect

  • Explore selected sutras from across the pāds (literally, “feet”) of the Yoga Sutras
  • Build a bigger-picture understanding of yoga philosophy and the problem yoga seeks to address
  • Connect familiar practices like āsana, prāṇāyāma, and meditation with Patañjali’s language and reasoning
  • Consider how these teachings show up in the terrain of your own life and practice
  • Pair ancient wisdom with contemporary knowledge, lived experience, and the realities of today’s yoga landscape
  • Engage in conversation, critical thinking, reflection, and embodied practice
  • Explore yoga philosophy through an anti-oppressive and anti-racist lens
  • Leave with new threads of inquiry to pull at long after the series ends

Each session pairs learning with chatting and practicing, creating space not only to take in information, but to question, connect, and explore together.

  • Journal prompts and questions to consider between lectures, creating space to reflect, digest, and follow the threads that feel most relevant to you
